Ever wonder how habits can transform your life? Discover 10 surprising facts about habits and learn practical tips that can turn you into a productivity expert!

I don’t know your life’s story but I bet you are busy almost all the time. Well, I also know a thing or two about juggling life’s many demands. From raising twins and navigating a bustling twenty-year career filled with travel and projects to running a side hustle selling digital planners, I’ve had my fair share of productivity struggles. But don’t worry; I’ve discovered some surprising tricks about habits that can transform you into a productivity superhero. Let’s dive in!

1. Keystone habits: The secret superpower

Ever heard of keystone habits? These are the habits that, once adopted, can trigger a positive ripple effect across many areas of your life. Think of them as the superheroes of the habit world. For instance, regular exercise is a classic keystone habit. It not only keeps you fit but also boosts your energy levels, improves your mood, and even helps you sleep better. When you start exercising regularly, you’ll eat healthier and be more productive at work without even trying. It’s like hitting the productivity jackpot!

Tracking keystone habits in my planners has helped me see significant changes in my life. I also enjoy some beauty in my daily planning and journaling so I Currently use this one:

 2. The 66-day Habit Rule: Patience Pays Off

You’ve probably heard that it takes 21 days to form a habit. Well, surprise! Research shows it actually takes about 66 days on average. Bummer. But knowing this can save you from feeling discouraged if new habits don’t stick right away. When I decided to implement a new morning routine with kids, I kept this in mind. I still don’t have the morning routine I’d wish to have till end of time, but I gave myself grace and patience. And eventually, some parts of it became second nature. So, hang in there! Good things take time.

3. Your Environment Matters

The environment around you plays a huge role in your habit formation.

Small changes in your surroundings can make a big difference.

For example, if you want to read more, leave a book on your bedside table instead of your phone. I realised, that during work I tend to forget to drink enough. So, nowadays I put at least one big bottle of water on my desk at the beginning of the workday. Suddenly, staying hydrated became much easier and the bottle is always emptied till the end of the day (sometimes I even have to refill it) Your environment can either support or hinder your productivity, so make it work for you.

4. Willpower Is Limited

We often think of willpower as an infinite resource, but it’s actually limited. The more decisions you make, the more depleted your willpower becomes. That’s why it’s crucial to automate as many decisions as possible. Habits do exactly that. I never go to be with makeup on. Even if I’m “half-dead”, my face is cleansed and washed before I go to sleep. A few brilliant people I know have built “uniforms” for work, for leisure days etc. So when they wake up they don’t have to think about what to put on that day. I’m not there to have 5 of the same shirts… but it’s still a very inspiring habit that saves up willpower for more important tasks. Remember, protect your willpower like the precious resource it is!

One way to save willpower is through time blocking. Check out my guide for more details.

5. Surround Yourself with Positivity

The people you spend time with can greatly influence your habits. Surrounding yourself with positive, motivated individuals can boost your productivity. When I joined a mastermind group, I found myself more committed to my business goals. The group’s energy and encouragement were infectious. So, whether it’s joining a club, finding a mentor, or just spending more time with like-minded friends, leverage social influence to your advantage.

6. Habit Stacking: Double the Productivity

Habit stacking is a powerful technique where you pair a new habit with an existing one. It’s like giving your productivity a double shot of espresso. For example, I wanted to start journaling but always forgot do it in time before my boys go to sleep. So, I decided to journal right after having my coffee in the morning. Having my morning warm drink was the established habit, and journaling piggybacked on it. Now, it’s a seamless part of my routine. Find a habit you already do daily and stack a new one onto it.

7. Identity-Based Habits: Be the Change

Focusing on identity-based habits is about shifting your mindset to become the person you want to be. Instead of saying, “I want to write a book,” say, “I am a writer.” This subtle shift makes a huge difference. When I started identifying myself as a persistent person, sticking to my decisions and actions during hard times became much easier. Your identity shapes your actions, so choose an identity that aligns with your goals.

8. Morning Routines: Start Strong

Morning routines are incredibly powerful, because your willpower is strongest at the start of the day. Establishing a productive morning routine can set a positive tone for the entire day. My morning routine includes a journaling, walking, cuddling up and chat a little with my boys, and some quiet time to plan my day. These activities energize me and prepare me for whatever the day brings. Create a morning routine that works for you, and watch your productivity soar.

9. Habit Tracking: Visualize Your Progress

Speaking of planners, my shop offers a fantastic digital planners with an extensive habit-tracking section (because I believe in the power of habits so much!). 10. Intrinsic Motivation: Find Your WHY

Habits driven by intrinsic motivation (internal rewards) are more likely to stick than those driven by extrinsic motivation (external rewards). Find the deeper reason behind your habits. For example, I exercise not just to stay fit, but because it makes me feel good and reduces stress. Understanding your “why” gives your habits purpose and makes them more meaningful. Dig deep and discover what truly motivates you.

Embrace the Habit Struggle

I get it—life is hectic, and maintaining productivity can be tough. I’ve been there, juggling work, twins, and a side hustle. It’s okay to struggle with productivity and goal setting. The key is to start small, be consistent, and celebrate your wins, no matter how tiny. Implementing these habit strategies won’t turn you into a productivity superhero overnight, but they will set you on the right path.
